With warmer weather on the way, dog owners need to be concerned about fleas. Thankfully, in recent years, there have been helpful advances with regard to the development of flea preventatives for our dogs.
The fact that we now have effective methods to control fleas is nearly miraculous when you consider a recent article in Science News.
According to the article, get thisâflea-like insects have existed for 165 million years. There they were, the evolutionary ancestors of modern day fleas crawling around on the dinosaurs in the Jurassic period. These fleas were 10 times the size of the fleas we see today.
Scientists who study fleas refer to âmodernâ or younger fleas. These were around 40 to 50 million years ago and they can be seen preserved in amber. Today, there are 2300 known species of fleas.
Fascinating, but I found myself scratching imaginary bugs as I read the article.
