So How Do I Keep Fleas Away from My Pet?

So How Do I Keep Fleas Away from My Pet?

Fleas, ticks and other parasites look for unhealthy animals first. One of the most important things you can do to make your dog or cat unattractive to bugs is to bring her to a state of optimal health.

A high quality, species-appropriate diet is the foundation upon which your pet’s good health and long life must be built.

In addition, you now have a safe, natural alternative to chemical pest preventives – Natural Flea and Tick Defense. I’m extremely excited to finally be able to make this wonderful product available to readers here at Mercola Healthy Pets. It’s been a long time coming, but I think you’ll agree it was worth the wait. For more information, view my recent video to learn just how special and effective this product is for dogs and cats.

A few other things you might also consider:

•Cedar oil is a long-recognized flea eradicator, and products exist that are specially formulated for cats and dogs.

•Natural, food-grade diatomaceous earth helps to remove fleas and ticks from your pet’s body. Never apply the powder to the face where contact with pets’ eyes could happen.

•Fresh garlic can be given to dogs and cats to prevent internal as well as external parasites. Work with your holistic vet to determine a safe amount for your pet’s body weight.

Guidance for Anyone Still Using Chemical Pest Repellents on Pets

If for some reason you find yourself in a situation where you simply can’t avoid using a chemical pest preventive, please do your beloved dog or cat a huge favor and follow these tips to reduce the toxic risks to your pet …

1.Be very careful to follow dosing directions on the label, and if your pet is at the low end of a dosage range, step down to the next lowest dosage. Be extremely cautious with small dogs, especially if you own one of the breeds reported to be at high risk for adverse reactions. And do not under any circumstances apply dog product to your cat.

2.Don’t depend exclusively on chemical treatments. Rotate natural preventives with chemical ones. An every other month rotation works well for many pet owners. In many parts of the country owners find they can successfully control ticks with two doses a year: one in the spring and one in the late summer.

3.Monitor your pet for adverse reactions after you apply a chemical product – especially when using one for the first time.

4.Since your pet’s liver will be tasked with processing the chemicals that make it into the bloodstream, it can be very beneficial to give your dog or cat a supplement to help detoxify her liver. I recommend milk thistle, which is a detox agent and also helps to actually regenerate liver cells.

5.Another product I recommend is chlorella, a super green food that is a very powerful detox agent. Your holistic vet can advise you about how much milk thistle and chlorella to give your pet, when, and for how long.

How to Keep Fleas Off Dogs

How to Keep Fleas Off Dogs

Fleas bite your dog, draw her blood and can even lay eggs right in her coat. All of this is, of course, annoying to your dog. But this annoyance can lead to skin conditions, allergies and illness. You need to take steps now to get rid of those fleas, and continually keep working to make sure that they do not revisit your home or your dog. This requires work and diligence on your part, but follow these steps for the health of your dog.

Instructions

    1

Begin by treating the home. Fleas can easily hide in your carpet and your pet’s bedding, as well as your bedding. Those little fleas can jump right onto your legs, ankles and feet when you are unaware and travel throughout your house. Thoroughly vacuum all of your carpets. After you finish, begin treating the area with a pet-safe pesticide that will kill fleas. You will want something that is also safe for your floorings and furniture. For this reason, read all the paperwork that comes with it. Once you apply it, you and your little Rover should allow your home to air out some before you enter.

    2

Consider treating the outside of your home. This is important even if your little Rover is an inside dog. You and other family members can track those little fleas into the house on your legs and feet. You can buy many different types of formulas that can be used on your lawn that is made especially for killing fleas. These formulas may come in granules, sprays or powders. Again, read all the literature pertaining to the formulas and make sure they are pet friendly and pet safe.

    3

Treat your pet with a special treatment such as Frontline. Just place it behind the dogs neck, where he can not reach. The formula soaks into the dogs system and into his blood. Thus, every time a flea attempts to bite him it dies.

    4

Treat all other animals, (if treating cats be sure to use specifically marked products)

Keep Your Pets Flea and Tick Free!

Brownie Boy says, “Say no to fleas and ticks!”

Guest bloggers The Staff at Petagogy

Spring is finally here, which means baseball, tulips, sunny weather and, unfortunately, the return of fleas and ticks! Thanks to the unseasonably mild winter, the flea and tick population in our area is much larger than usual, so we’re expecting a higher than average flea and tick problem this spring, summer and fall throughout Western Pennsylvania.

It’s extremely important to make sure that both dogs and cats are protected against fleas and ticks. Although traditional flea and tick medications like Frontline and K9 Advantix are effective, there are many natural alternatives available. These alternatives lack the pesticides and chemicals that are in the normally prescribed preventatives.

Simple remedies such as bathing your dog or cat often and giving your pet supplements, including omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and B complex vitamins, which boost your pet’s natural ability to repel insects, can help keep your pet flea and tick free.

Another great supplement is natural brewer’s yeast, which, given daily, will help repel all types of bugs. Other dietary additions that will boost the ability of your pet to repel bugs include seaweed, fresh garlic (in small quantities), and organic apple cider vinegar. Further, certain scents and oils repel insects naturally, including rosemary, lemon, lavender, clove, thyme and peppermint.

Before depending on chemical-based treatments for your animals this flea and tick season, give the following natural remedies a try:

  • Bathe your pet with a shampoo made from ingredients that repel fleas and ticks naturally. Natural grooming product brands like Pal Dog and Cloudstar make lavender, rosemary, and mint scents that are both good smelling and effective for insect prevention.

  • To check for fleas, brush through your dog or cat’s hair with a flea comb. Doing this above a white sheet or white paper allows you to see if there are actually fleas.

  • After walks, thoroughly check you dogs for ticks. If you find any, use fine-tipped tweezers to remove them, being careful not to crush the tick. Tick removal instruments like the Tick Key also help you remove ticks without squeezing them and are the easiest and safest way to remove the entire embedded tick.

  • Both Ark Naturals and Sentry Natural Defense make safe and effective flea and tick sprays for both dogs and cats that contain ingredients like geranium, clove and peppermint oil. These sprays will protect your pets from fleas and ticks if sprayed liberally once a week or whenever your pet will be outside or in wooded areas.

  • Sentry Natural Defense also makes a safe monthly topical application made entirely of natural oils and ingredients that will kill and repel fleas and ticks on contact.

In addition to being safe, natural ways for preventing fleas and ticks, many of these remedies cost much less than the traditional flea and tick medicines. They are also safe to use around children and other pets. Prevention is the best way to make sure your pets are safe during the upcoming warm weather months when more time is spent having fun outdoors.
